Here, we’ll explain what the treatment names mean and what happens to your body, including orthobiologics, a group name for shots using donor tissue or material drawn from your blood, pelvis, or body fat. They aren’t all the same. A proper exam can’t be skipped. ## What is PRP made from? PRP starts with a regular blood draw. A machine spins the tube until the blood separates, then the provider keeps a small portion holding many platelets. Those letters mean platelet-rich plasma. A needle places that portion into the sore joint or tendon. Concentrated PRP follows the same blood-draw and spinning steps, though offices don’t all make it alike. You can ask how much blood is drawn and which portion the machine keeps. The provider can also name the exact spot where the needle will go. It’s fair to want those details. The name natural pain treatments is sometimes used because the shot comes from your own body. That doesn’t mean PRP will end soreness for good. Results vary, and the reason for the ache still matters. Your exam keeps the discussion tied to your joint. ## How is marrow concentrate different? Marrow concentrate begins with marrow drawn from the pelvis, not from an arm vein. The marrow is spun, and the smaller portion that remains is put into the joint or tendon. That means you may have soreness where the marrow was taken. You’re welcome to ask how recovery differs from a blood draw. A fat-based product begins with body fat removed through a separate procedure and then broken down. Donor products may come from placenta, umbilical cord, or amniotic fluid rather than from you. These are not simply stronger forms of PRP. Before agreeing, you can ask what enters your body and where it came from. ## What care can I discuss if the ache remains? A single-donor comparison of five PRP preparations (RegenPRP, Mini GPS III, Selphyl, Arthrex ACP and a laboratory protocol) across ten donors found two systems produced leukocyte-RICH PRP with higher red-cell, white-cell and neutrophil proportions while three produced leukocyte-poor PRP, and that platelet and growth-factor doses varied substantially between devices, with platelet dose positively correlated with every growth factor measured. ASA produced significant KOOS and VAS improvements maintained through 12 months with a 63.2% OMERACT-OARSI responder rate, no radiographic differences, and no concerning immunoglobulin or anti-HLA responses. Adverse events with ASA were comparable to HA, while NO treatment-emergent adverse events were reported in the saline group.
